Public schools: An American achievement
Few things are more American than the idea of a free public school education.
Public schools have helped make us one of the freest, richest, and best-educated nations in history. They have taught future presidents, Nobel laureates, great artists, musicians, and writers - leaders in every field of human endeavor.
For over two centuries, they have been an essential part of the American experience. Now they are being challenged to do even more.
Calls for change
With the increasing social, political, and economic pressures that are being placed on public schools, what may have worked in the past is no longer adequate to prepare for the future.
Many remedies have been proposed. However, very few of these theories are grounded in the reality of actual day-to-day classroom experience - the ultimate proving ground for discovering what works and what doesn’t.
